Interest Groups
Ladies Wing
SMA Ladies Wing (LW) has been very active, organizing independent events, collaborating with other organizations and actively participating and supporting all the events organized by SMA as well as conducting main activities of the LW.
The following activities were held:
- Indian Cultural Fest 2017 – 7th to 15th April ‘17 – SMA LW represented the Malayalee community at the Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association annual event, Indian Cultural Fest 2017 held at the Indian Heritage Centre. An interesting and informative exhibition showcasing the authentic culture and tradition of multiple ethnic Indian communities was well attended. The highlight was the set up of a mock-up of a traditional Kerala marriage function. Our able members gathered an assortment of tough to obtain paraphernalia in short notice. The children of our members were beautifully made up and dressed as bride and groom. It drew a lot of applause as the procession, which included brides & grooms from different Indian communities walked down the red carpet. Many dignitaries including ministers were among those present.
- Indian Traditional Games Festival – 30th April 2017 – in collaboration with Vivekananda Seva Sangh. Our ladies Wing members ably represented SMA at this at GIIS Queenstown Campus. Taking part in the creation of a very big ‘rangoli’ under the guidance of record holder Mrs Vijaya Mohan, who gave us lots of insights into this traditional art form. Many of the members who participated are eager to have another go at it and this has gone into the future-events list of the Ladies Wing for consideration.
- Nadakamela 2017- 27th May 2017. The first SMA event after the new management committee and the new Ladies Wing President took over was the Nadakamela. Almost immediately after the elections, our talented ladies, under the leadership of Mrs Uma Shankar, started work on a wonderful drama, named “Radhamanasam” and represented SMA at this drama festival organized by SMA cultural committee. Staging of this drama by ladies who handled everything from script to direction to acting as well as dance, choreography, music, backdrops, stage décor, preparing of stage props like swings – from scratch – was a remarkable achievement. It was showcased to much acclaim from the audience.
- ‘Getting to know you’ – A Social Get together – 3rd June 2017 – Ladies wing members celebrated the holidays and festive season by coming together and having a fun-filled evening including games, songs, dances and lots of food prepared by the members themselves. We got to know the new members and got to know more about existing members as well.
- ‘Dance of the enchantress’ – Mohiniyattam performance – 17th June 2017. In collaboration with Soorya Singapore, the SMA Ladies Wing played an active role in showcasing the talent of the amazing Dr Rekha Raju. A PhD in this field, she presented a demonstration with dialogue to explain each of her meticulously chosen pieces on Mohiniyattam to a bunch of classical dance lovers. They shared their knowledge and delved deep into the subject thereby enlightening and educating the audience. It was our pleasure to introduce the dancer to the audience, compere and deliver the vote of thanks at this event among other things.
- Other than the special LW events, the team had supported various activities organised by the SMA committee and other organisations, likely, Chinmayam 2017, Onam Nite, Onam Village, Centenary Dinner, Karunyam etc.
- Onam Village – 24th September 2017 – A Mega Thiruvathira by over 100 ladies was the highlight of the Onam Village 2017, organised by SMA and various Malayalee organisations in Singapore. To pay tribute to this century-old organisation, SMA, the Ladies wing members have conceptualised, choreographed, managed rehearsals at multiple locations, coordinated, arranged for costumes and accessories for 120 participants and brought to fruition a record-breaking Thiruvathira that is the largest Thiruvathira by any organisation in Singapore.
- Ladies Wing Meeting and planning of Agenda – 12th January 2018 – A discussion cum brainstorming session was held at SMA hall to plan the schedule for activities after the November – December 2017 break during which many of our members travelled overseas. Ideas discussed included having Ladies Karaoke night, Ladies Cultural night, Workshops for ladies and children and a Mega Thiruvathira to enter into Singapore book of records. Recruiting participants for it and practise sessions started soon thereafter.
- Chingay 2018 – Was held successfully on 23rd and 24th January by the Cultural wing of SMA. Members of LW actively participated and along other Wings of SMA and other participants, made it a successful event.
- Ladies Working committee Meeting – 3rd Feb 2018 – The meeting primarily discussed the activities and events for the upcoming Malayalam Heritage Fest as well as the Vishu Heritage showcase at SMA Hall. A Karaoke session by the LW was held at the SMA Hall and was a resounding success with participation by folks of all ages, singing old and new Malayalam classics.
- Malayalam Heritage Fest at Indian Heritage Centre at Indian Heritage Centre – 10th Feb 2018 – The LW members worked tirelessly to set up a ‘Pookalam’ as well as a ‘Kerala Food Showcase’ which included lots of traditional delight. LW members and their children participated in the cultural programmes, which included music and dance performances.
- Vishu Celebrations at SMA Hall – 24th Feb 2018 – A grand Vishu Kani was set up by our LW members with lots of assistance in the form of props, suggestions and decorations from many pioneer members. A showcase of how Vishu morning used to be celebrated was done by our pioneer members and their grandchildren. A video shoot was undertaken to capture and preserve the traditional methods and memories for future generations. It was followed up with a sumptuous lunch for all members present.
- Megathiruvathira 2018 – SMA’s entry into the Singapore Book of Records was held on 8th April 208 at the Woodlands Stadium. A proud moment for the SMA team, it has successfully entered the Singapore Book Of Records as the Largest Mass Thiruvathira Dance Performance in Singapore! Choreographed and organised by members of the LW, it had multiracial and multi-ethnic participants from all walks of life in Singapore. Ranging from the age group of 8 years old to almost 60 years old it has nearly 390 participants who performed the traditional ‘Kaykottikali’ in ethnic Kerala costume and accessories. With more than 1200 in the audience it had a carnival “pooram” like atmosphere with ‘chenda melam’ and cultural performances adding to the festivity.
- LISHA 2018 – April 13th to May 13th 2018 – The LW will be actively participating at various event segments organised by LISHA in music, dance, cultural showcase as well as Fashion shows during the month-long Indian Cultural Fest organised by LISHA along with other Indian Associations in Singapore. For the opening night, members of the LW performed a Thiruvathira, organised a cat-walk and styled and dressed two children as thamburan and thamburaati.
- Participation at various SMA events – SMA LW has always been very supportive of all the events that the main committee embarks on. As always, the LW played a very significant role in managing the reception of guests at various events like Onam Village 2017, Onam Nite 2017, and the launch event of SMA’s centenary year- SMA 100, the closing ceremony of the centenary, etc.
- Many ladies actively participated in the Singapore Malayalee Literary Forum event called ‘Kavya Sopanam’ as well as in Nadakamela 2017, Karunyam 2017, Sports events, Welfare events just to name a few.
On-going activities:
- Silver Support Group (previously known as Adopt A Friend) SMA LW has embarked on a programme, to value the pioneer members of our community. There is a group of active volunteers, under the leadership of Ms Amala Menon, who regularly visits someone from our older generation. This programme aims to encourage the humanitarian values that we upkeep.
- Organising of Karaoke Sessions at SMA
- Support, activities & volunteer-planning for the upcoming Wellness Centre
- Support, Involvement and Volunteering in the IHC Youth Networking and Youth Involvement Projects by LW members as well as their young adult children.
Youth Wing
Singapore Malayalee Association (SMA) Youth Wing is a group of Singaporean Malayalee and Non-Malayalee youth who are keen to promote our culture and heritage and create awareness of various social issues in Singapore.

Varnam
This serves as a platform for artists to collaborate and conduct regular art exhibitions featuring their art pieces.

Drama
SMA Drama group puts up a yearly drama production, ‘Natakamela’.
Singapore Malayalee Literary Forum
The Singapore Malayalee Literary Forum (SMLF) is platform to appreciate literary creations and to inspire Singaporean writers in their creations. The forum presented 15 literary sessions in 2017, SMLF has about 100 active members who participate on various sessions. SMLF welcomes all Singapore Malayalees to actively take part in the sessions of the Literary Forum. Please write to at [email protected] for regular updates on the activities of the forum.
SMLF released its 3rd publication, the “The Selected poems of MK Bhasi” on the 15th June 2017. The past President of Sahitya Academi of Kerala, Mr. Perumpadavam Sreedharan. Ambassador Mr. Gopinath Pillai handed over the first copy to Mr. Perumpadavam who release the book and gave an elaborate speech on MK Bhasi Poems. Mr. T Suresh Kumar, Mr. Vijaya Krishanan, Mr. D Sudheeran and Mr. Krishna Kumar also presented sessions on the event.
A number of SMLF members presented their studies in 2016. These include sessions from Mr. Mohan Raj on Vailoppilly, Mr. Ashok on O V Vijayan, Mr. Krishna Kumar on Lalithambika Antharjanam. There were sessions of “Kavya Kalari” conducted across various months of the year. These sessions were to inspire the writers of Singapore to come together to present their literary works and also to bounce the works among each other.

These sessions also saw guidance sessions on the art and craft of literature making from Mr. T Suresh Kumar and Mr. R B Pramod. The effort resulted in the form of a book, the second publication of SMLF.
SMLF published 3 books in connection with the anniversary celebrations. Kavyasopanam II was an anthology of poems from the poets of Singapore. 14 poets took part in the session including Ms. Pia Kumar, Ms. Mary Raphael, Ms. Anjana Prem, Ms. Biju Prahlad, Ms. Uma Shankar, Mr. Sathyan Pookkoottath, Mr. Mohan Raj, Mr. Ashok Kumar, Mr. Madan Pushpakath, Mr. Padma Kumar U, Mr. Vijaya Krishnan, Mr. D. Sudheeran, Mr. Litton Kurishinkal and Mr. Sunil Sivadas participated on the publication.
Dr. Thara Ravindran published her two books; a collection of her translations called “poykayum himakanavum” and an independent creation of collection of poems “ente kavithayil njaanilla.”
All the three books were released on the 12th of November 2017 at Sahithyolsavam in connection with the anniversary celebrations of SMLF. The event was conducted in association with Kerala Sahitya Academi. Noted writers from Kerala, including the president of the Academi Mr. Vaisakhan, Secretary Dr. KP Mohanan, Award winning writers Mr. M Mukundan Mr. TD Ramakrishnan and Ms. Kadija Mumthaz participated in various sessions. The three-day long festival saw various sessions of presentations from the SMLF team as well as the distinguished writers.
Story writing competition was held in conjunction with the anniversary and Ms. Hema Sivaramakrishnan won the first place. Ms. Smitha Augustine won the second place in the competition where about 20 Singaporean writers participated.

Events conducted in 2017
SMA Soccer Tournament 2017: Singapore Malayalee Association Soccer tournament 2016 will be conducted at Naval Base Secondary School, Yishun on 30 Sep – 01 Oct. 15 teams will participate in the 9-a-side competition.
SMA Badminton Tournament 2017: Singapore Malayalee Association Badminton “കളിക്കളം” 2017 was conducted at Senja-Cashew Community Club, Bukit Panjang on 29-30 July. Over 150 players participated in the tournament in 7 events viz Men’s open, Mixed Doubles, Veterans, U12 boys/girls & U16 boys/girls. Grassroots leader Mr.Chiang Meng Kiat was the chief guest at the presentation ceremony. An ever-rolling trophy in memory of Mr. Vasudevan Nair was presented to the Men’s Open winners. $5000 worth of badminton gear sponsored by BABOLAT was presented to the winners and lucky draw winners.

Welfare Committee
Singapore Malayalee Association is actively involved in Welfare activities and now expanding to bigger involvement in new areas of community welfare activities. The welfare is group has been involved in extending help for the needy.
With a relationship extending beyond many years, Sree Narayana Mission Home for Aged and sick continues to one of the key activity areas of the Welfare group. With the new guidelines on inmates care even by the external volunteers, SNM has been enforcing training for volunteers. Last year, Welfare committee organised training for more than 40 volunteers thus getting ready them to take part in the feeding sessions and the interaction activities. The team continues to organize feeding sessions at the Home every month. Those who are interested to join this team may approach the Welfare Secretary, Mr. Badarudeen. SMA would like to thank each one of the volunteers and members who helped out on the SMA’s feeding sessions and volunteer activities in Sree Narayana Mission.
Welfare team has also been engaging the needy to provide them with equipment. The team identified one situation where there was a requirement for a wheel chair and have been able to successfully source the wheel chair. On other support activities, Welfare team has been able to extend legal services to those who needed it.
The committee would like to invite all members to join the team and register as a volunteer to help out on the welfare activities. We will keep you updated on our welfare activities. The volunteers have the option to join the activities as their time permits. We would also like to request you to donate what you can afford to this noble activity.
SMA’s regular event, Karunyam was conducted on the 27th Jan 2018 and the proceeds of the event went to Sree Narayana Mission. A blood donation drive was conducted along with the event where close to 100 blood donations were registered. A/P Muhammed Faisal Ibrahim was the guest of honour on the event.

Children's Club Mayilpeeli
This is a platform for children to develop and showcase their talents, with the goal of fostering interest in our heritage and culture in our children, while facilitating personal development. Some of the events include talks by motivational speakers, drama – for children by children and poetry sessions for children.
Mayilpeeli conducted a Magical-Motivational session for Children on 27th May 2017 led by well-known magician and motivational speaker Mr. Gopinath Muthukad. It was an eye opener session for the big crowd gathered at Sree Narayana Mission auditorium. Mr. Gopinath inspired children explaining about their uniqueness and the way to go ahead, through his magic way of talk.
Mayilpeeli aims to transfer the values of our different art forms which is equally important to develop children’s personality skills. The group wrote and directed a Malayalam drama for children ‘Manjadimanikal’- highlighting many moral values, more than 10 children participated in the event which was staged on 27th May 2017 along with SMA Natakamela. The children’s drama was well received, discussed and appreciated in our society.
Mayilpeeli believes exposing children to literature is crucial. A Malayalam poem recitation session was arranged for children on 12th Nov 2018 during SMA Sahithyothavam in association with Kerala Sahithya Akademi. Mayilpeeli is planning many other interesting/informative events for children. Please support and help your children to participate and be an active part of Mayilpeeli.

Dedicated to honoring and engaging senior members of the community, this group organizes activities and events that value their contributions and ensure their continued inclusion in the Malayalee community.
Teens Club
Focused on teenagers, this group provides opportunities for personal growth, cultural engagement, and social interaction through tailored programs and events.
Publication
SMA publishes Onopaharam, an annual bilingual magazine that showcases literary works, cultural insights, and community updates. It also includes newsletters and blogs to keep members informed.
Sakhi
An interest group dedicated to migrant domestic workers. It provides training programs to enhance their skills for current roles and future endeavors while promoting their welfare.
Kerala Vadyam
This group preserves traditional Kerala folk music by promoting instruments like the Chenda Melam. Performances celebrate the rich Vadyam heritage of Kerala.
Paadam Namukku Padaam
A musical interest group open to all ages that fosters a love for music through singing sessions and performances.
Tech Forum
A hub for technology enthusiasts that organises workshops, tech talks and networking events to explore innovations in technology.
SMA Pro
A professional networking forum that conducts seminars, panel discussions, mentorship programs, and fireside chats to facilitate career growth and knowledge sharing among professionals.
SMA Library
The SMA Library offers resources on Malayalam literature, culture, and history. It serves as a knowledge hub for members interested in exploring their heritage.
Dollors and Sense
An initiative aimed at financial literacy within the community by providing workshops or resources related to managing personal finances effectively.
